    This was really sad, are these horses trained prior to this class, or is the requirement to come in right off the track? Years ago we only had ex race horses to make into show hunters, they were hot, one sided, hard to get soft and quiet. They were a lot of work to be successful. In today’s show world, the hunters are mostly European warmbloods now, and are much better suited for this.

    Heavens alive audiences in America just don't shut up. The grey mare and the six year old dark Bay need turn out on good pasture and some targeted feeding, after a year reassessed before being ridden again. The mare is not muscled up enough for work. She may remain a narrow skinny horse but should still be given all the chances to improve. A lot of racehorses are raced too light ie without enough condition, this is extremely detrimental for their development as muscle atrophy is the result, most have it in some form or other, she seems not to have exactly that but very close to it, particularly the loins are worrying. The rider is also too heavy and big for her at this point and she shouldn't be jumping as she is already showing some loss of ligament elasticity in her front limbs, that is they're not repairing quickly enough to get stronger. Race horse training is not training, they're backed too soon, raced too soon the muscles are not correct for a ridding horse. I don't know the ages here or history as I just cannot hear above the crowds. I can see the condition though. Most need at least one - three years letting down, growing and putting on condition or you risk compounding any issues that exist and there are always issues even if the horse is Xrayed 100% sound. If he was riding a young warmblood in full health his ridding would be spot on. There's no point in the hurry at all with off the track TBs, you need patience to do it properly without the pressures of anything competitive, so I'm a bit wary of these "events" anyway. The Chestnut was holding it's head in some very odd positions, basicaly none of them were fully softened to the hand though the grey was the best IMO as she seemed fully flexible.

    Just to clarify: any horse that is registered with the Makeover, even if it doesn't end up competing in October, is a Makeover graduate? What exactly does that mean?

    • @RetiredRacehorse
      @RetiredRacehorse 2 года назад

      Due to the nature of horses, especially green horses, not every horse that is registered to compete at the Makeover will ultimately compete in October. As long as the horse was registered to compete, it's still considered a graduate of the Thoroughbred Makeover program.

    As a racehorse trainer and a H/J rider my entire life,my opinion doesn’t carry much weight. I wish this interview ,together with a montage of Rodney’s great TB’ s could get put together where a bigger audience could see it and MAYBE make some H/ J trainers ,riders and owners see how great these horses are just from what Rodney says here,which I agree 1000% with. TB’ s will go through fire for you if you treat them right. They are very loyal,loving horses. #OTTB #Give them a chance

    I wonder why they go through all the training and everything for those months to be in this and then turn around and sell the horse why would somebody do that?

    • @suzanneyoung8011
      @suzanneyoung8011 2 года назад

      Because many of them are professional trainers who already own other horses. A number of these trainers participate in this competition every year and sometimes with two horses. They can't keep them all. This is part of the process of finding new homes for OTTB's.
